An offshore yacht in distress may depend on another sailing crew. A new Cruising Club of America (CCA) report examines 28 yacht-to-yacht rescues to help sailors prepare.
The 63-page report covers when to seek help, safely bring vessels together, transfer people aboard, and respond after rescue.
“Sailors rarely expect to answer a Mayday, but they may be the nearest or only vessel able to help,” says William Strassberg, MD, past chair of CCA’s Safety and Seamanship Committee and chair of the report team. “Lessons from 28 rescues help crews prepare before facing one.”
The study followed reviews of incidents in the 2024 Newport Bermuda Race. With US Sailing and the Bermuda Race Foundation, CCA examined documented rescues and interviewed sailors involved.
